Come to believe that The Divine has no religion, is greater than religion, and can heal us from our hurts.
I was raised in a Christian home and so I came to believe in the “Christian” God. But God — or The Divine as we prefer in Religious Recovery — is not a Christian God or a Buddhist God or a Jewish God. Even Jesus was not “Christian.” He was Jewish and followed the religion of his birth. We can choose to believe in one divine being or we can choose to believe in one divine being who goes by many names: God, Allah, Krishna, Yahweh, Eternal Life Force, Sun, Moon, Stars — it doesn’t matter. Or, we can choose to believe there is no supreme being. What humans believe doesn’t change what is. To die for something that can’t be proven simply because another religion believes differently seems ludicrous. In Religious Recovery we choose to believe in a higher power and we choose to call that Supreme Being The Divine. At the same time we honor all names for The Divine and all paths that seek to find, honor, and worship The Divine. We don’t believe The Divine is religious or even the instigator of religions. Religions were created by man to serve man in his quest to find his way Home. Just because one path to Home is different from another doesn’t make one right and the other wrong. We honor all roads Home.
